商周有一陣子的英文專欄都沒寫幾個字，所以沒出差池。這期（1378）多寫了幾句，就又出毛病了。

我感覺最近幾期的「戒掉爛英文」專欄喜歡去搜尋比較不常用的俚語說法，可能一方面凸顯自己的學問，一方面避掉被輕易看破手腳的可能。這不是一個好趨勢。類似的趨勢出現在學校教學：我在工作上觀察到，許多台灣高中英文老師喜歡考冷僻罕用的句型與單字，以考倒學生為榮，好凸顯自己學識淵博，卻苦了學生背一堆沒用的英文。更糟糕的是，自己也沒有用對。這期商周提出的幾個片語：good call, call someone out, have someone’s number, dial down，除了第一個以外，都不算是常用語，所以作者自己的例句也就窘態畢露了。

──Good call! = 好做法！

例句：

A: Let’s complete the task successfully. 讓我們完成這項工作吧！

B: Good call! 我贊成！

評析：complete the task successfully是中式英文，因為complete與successfully意義重疊，後者根本多餘。剩下Let’s complete the task，也是廢話，因為「完成工作」根本就是「義務」，而let’s句型代表「建議」，也就是提出「可能的選項」。而「完成工作」是義務，並不能列為「選項」。修改後成為：

A: The boss is breathing down my neck about project G. Let’s finish it tonight.

B: Good call! I’ll order pizza. I can’t think on an empty stomach.

──call someone out戳破（謊言）

例句：I hope the manager will not call us out on our negotiating techniques.我希望那主管不會戳破我們的談判技巧。

評析：「談判技巧」並非「說謊」，此句用詞不當。不意外，“call us out on our negotiating techniques” 的Google搜尋結果是「0」。修改後成為：

Ken said he had notified the salespeople about the policy change, but John called him out – he didn’t tell anyone.
